Keep Your Pool Concrete Decking Looking Good This Summer

Pool Concrete Decking

If you want to keep your concrete pool decking looking good this summer, you have to address any issues that may detract from its appearance and safety, such as cracks or staining. It’s a fact of life that concrete tends to get cracked, faded, stained and neglected over time, leaving your pool area looking nasty and unkempt. It can also be dangerous, so check out these tips to repairing those small issues that can become bigger with neglect.

Why do Cracks Form?

Cracks are a big nuisance to pool owners, not to mention they can easily detract from the look of your pool area. In addition, they raise safety issues for kids, adults and pets as they run or walk around the decking. Some of the smaller cracks can be remedied with a DIY job. Cracks appear initially because of freeze and thaw cycles throughout the seasons, caused by the expansion and contraction of the concrete material. Sometimes, product failure and poor installation are to blame.

Posing a Danger

Cracks look ugly, that’s for sure. But they do so much more than that. People can stub their toes and trip, fall, get cuts, or even slip into the pool by accident. Even beyond the danger to people is the danger to your pool. If you don’t address cracks in a timely manner, water can seep in and invade the pool beam, leading to shifting of the soil. By not addressing this at the source, you’re doing a lot of internal damage to the structure of your pool.

Small Cracks: What to Do

Patching tiny cracks is easy when you have the right supplies and tools. First, gather all your necessary supplies, such as a garden hose, liquid bonder and dry deck repair powder in a matching concrete shade. Then, rinse off the deck with the hose to get all debris off. Gently tap the surface to find hollow areas, then chip away until you reach a solid surface. Mix the liquid bonder and powder with a trowel and apply the paste into every crack as thoroughly as you can. Wipe off any excess material with a damp towel or rag.

Some More Tips

Staining also makes your concrete pool decking look neglected. Post rules and do not allow drinks and food around the decking. Family and guests should stick to patio and table areas to consume food and beverages. In the event a spill does occur, wipe it up or hose it off immediately.

Every day before using the pool, brush off debris from the concrete with a broom, as twigs, leaves and dirt can all contribute to staining. Once every year or two, pressure wash the concrete and apply a protective sealant to keep it looking as pristine as possible. This will prevent dirt, algae, grime and stains from ruining the appearance of your concrete.
